Hello World! My name is Tristan Hawes, though I tend to go by TJ.

Today was the orientation meeting for the Flatiron cohort of 3–15–2021, and I learned quite a bit about how the course will work. We will have 5 phases, each roughly 4 weeks in length, and we will be required to work through the material and complete a final project at the end of each of these phases.

We are also required to write several of these Blog things throughout the course, which I understand the reason behind, but am a little lost at how to do properly. I have never seen or written a technical blog before. My only prior experience was several years ago when I was still a student in High School and my World Culture Elective course had us write fictional travel blogs about various places in the world, but those were more of 3 paragraph posted Essays than a true Blog.

We were told that having our first blog be about “Why we want to pursue coding.” would be a good topic, and so I shall talk about that next. Back in High School, I was very interested in video games, whether it was playing them, watching others play them, or simply seeing how they were made. My interest led me to think about pursuing a career in game development and design, but I felt that I lacked the creativity to be able to create something unique, or truly special. This feeling was further cemented when I started attending college for CompSci with a minor in Graphical Design. That brings us to now, several years later, I still have an interest in games, and wish to give coding another shot, not necessarily just for game development now though. I also did not want to go through the process of college again, as that was emotionally draining for me last time, so I looked for alternatives. That is how I came to discover Flatiron.

Gosh, I went on a bit of a tangent there. To summarize, I want to learn to code so that I can be one step closer to working on developing a game that will be enjoyed by many.

The next step is to get started on my Phase 1 assignments, as well as fiddle around and customize my Medium profile to make these blogs look a little better, and a lot less bland then just a wall of text on a white screen.

Thanks for reading, and I hope your day is wonderful!
